We are so lucky here at The Yarn Patch to be able to make connections with some of the wonderfully creative crafting community both in Belfast, Newtownabbey and all around Northern Ireland. We hope to regularly share news about our friends and crafters with our Community Spotlight section, right here on our blog. This week, it is the turn of the absolutely lovely Purple Turtle Crochet, who makes the loveliest crochet gifts, toys and blankets. We put our Top Ten Crochet Question Quiz to her, asking about her passion for craft, her likes and dislikes and everything in between….
How long have you been crocheting and why do you like it?
I remember exactly. It was the 24th March 2016 when I first picked up a crochet hook. I started for my Duke of Edinburgh Award, and simply haven’t stopped since! I love it because I adore making things, especially if it is a gift for someone else.
What are your top 3 favourite crafts?
Do I really only get to choose three? I would have to say, crochet, embroidery and writing. Although I could do so many more!
What is your idea of the perfect day?
I think I am a typical crafter, to be honest, as my perfect day would be having the heating on, getting cozy underneath multiple blankets, having a steaming mug of tea or coffee beside me, and my latest WIP to work on.
Who taught you to crochet?
I taught myself to crochet through YouTube, there are so many brilliant videos there that you can rewind and pause when you need to work on something tricky or new. I also had some help from a leader back in my Duke of Edinburgh days.
What advice would you give beginners?
Always have at least 4 darning needles on hand as they like to wander!
What is your favourite thing about the Yarn Patch?
My favourite thing about The Yarn Patch is Sam and her yarn! She is absolutely amazing and is always on hand to help if needed and the selection of yarn is astounding.
What project are you currently working on?
I’m currently working through a list actually! The main ones are C2C Eevee baby set, a Granny Square Baby boy blanket and around 70 mini heart key rings for a youth group that I help with. Its quite fun to have a few things on the go at once, it keeps me busy!!
Of your gorgeous products, which is the most popular with customers?
I would have to say my Octopi keyrings. Everyone absolutely adores them!
What is your idea of the perfect place to crochet?
Has to be my bedroom surrounded by blankets.
Surprise us with a random fact about yourself?
I’m a trainee building services engineer. Quite a world away from crochet and crafting!
